Gary Matthewman studied in London, Berlin and Vienna. He has been described by The Times and The Independent as ‘movingly perceptive’ and ‘quick-witted,' and is now established as one of Britain's leading song pianists.
Recent and forthcoming appearances abroad include his debut recitals at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Musikverein in Vienna, as well as in Berlin, Amsterdam, Basel, Lucerne, Madrid, Baden-Baden, Zagreb, Washington DC, Toronto, São Paulo, Beijing, Melbourne and Sydney.
Recent and future recital partners include Sir Thomas Allen, Sumi Jo, Mark Padmore, Lisa Milne, Kate Royal, Andrei Bondarenko, Adam Plachetka, Ian Bostridge, Elizabeth Watts, Markus Werba, Sylvia Schwartz, Jacques Imbrailo, Sally Matthews and Sarah-Jane Brandon and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
As official accompanist for vocal contests, he has worked for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, the DasLied - International Song Competition in Berlin, the Hilde Zadek Competition in Vienna, and last Summer joined the Queen Sonja International Music Competition for singers in Oslo. Gary has made numerous live broadcasts and recordings for BBC radio 3, and his recording of Schubert's Winterreise with Matthew Rose for Stone Records was released early this year. In 2009 Gary conceived the Lied in London recitals, dedicated to the performance of song in a relaxed and intimate setting. He is a song coach for the Jette Parker Young Artists at the Royal Opera House.
Gary accompanied Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in an episode of Downton Abbey and has been coaching singers from the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation (UK).
